buying guide native american flute bosnia where to buy

When someone hears a Native American style flute for the first time, the question is usually the same: where can I buy one here? Music shops in Bosnia and Herzegovina stock recorders and concert flutes, and almost never this instrument. The short answer: right here. At Resonant Crafts we make Native American style flutes by hand in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and every available flute can be ordered directly on this site. Below we explain what the instrument is and what to check so you do not end up with a flute that is out of tune, wherever you buy it.

What the instrument actually is

In Bosnian the instrument is called "indijanska flauta", in English the Native American flute, and in some places a pimak or love flute. It is a wooden flute with two internal chambers. You blow into the first, and an external block shaped like a bird directs the air into the second chamber where the tone forms. That is why no embouchure is needed: you blow into the end and the note is there.

Most flutes made today have five or six holes and are tuned to a pentatonic minor scale. There are no wrong notes in that scale, so most people play their first melody within ten minutes. The history and construction are covered in our post on Native American style flutes.

Where to buy one in Bosnia and Herzegovina

You can buy a Native American style flute right here on resonantcrafts.com. We make our flutes by hand from local wood: walnut, spruce, oak, fir, ash, and sometimes bamboo. Each flute is unique, tuned to 440 Hz and finished with olive oil and beeswax. Everything currently available is on the available flutes page with price, key, wood and length. If the key you want is not listed, we make flutes to order in two to three weeks.

The advantage of buying directly from us is simple: you know who made the flute, you can hear it before buying on our YouTube channel, and if anything is wrong you talk to the person who built it.

What to check before you buy

  • Tuning. Ask what pitch the flute is tuned to. The standard is 440 Hz, which lets you play along with guitar, piano or recordings. Some buyers want 432 Hz for meditation. Either is fine, but the flute must be in tune. You can check it yourself with our online tuner.
  • Key. Mid keys (A, G, F#) are shorter, easier to hold and livelier. Low keys (Low E, Low D, Low C) give a warm, meditative tone but need a wider finger stretch. For beginners with smaller hands we recommend A or G.
  • Number of holes. Five holes is the simplest and gives the full pentatonic scale. Six holes adds one note, but a beginner will not notice the difference.
  • Wood and finish. Wood changes the tone colour, not the difficulty. Check what the flute is finished with, because your lips touch the wood. Natural oil and wax are safe. Varnish is not always.
  • Who made it. Ask who made the flute and how it was tuned. A maker can answer both.

How much a Native American style flute costs

The price depends on the key, the length and the wood. Low flutes are longer and take more work, so they cost more than mid keys. The exact prices of our flutes are listed next to each instrument on the available flutes page, in Bosnian marks (KM). For custom flutes we confirm the price before starting work.

How to order and how long it takes

You order a flute from the range through the order form or by writing to us via contact, Instagram or Facebook. Available flutes ship right away. Custom flutes take two to three weeks, depending on the order queue.

Delivery within Bosnia and Herzegovina goes by BH Post Express and takes two to five days. To Serbia and Montenegro we ship by PostPak, eight to fourteen days, and those parcels may be subject to customs fees. All delivery and ordering details are on the FAQ page.
